70 years of ‘Wiadomości Statystyczne. The Polish Statistician’
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the release of the first issue of Wiadomości Statystyczne. The Polish Statistician (WS), a scientific journal published by Statistics Poland and the Polish Statistical Association. We will be celebrating this event in a special way.
To better understand the history of WS, we have delved into our archives and conducted interviews with those associated with the journal: former and current members of the editorial team, official statistics staff, authors and readers. This research and these conversations have helped us reconstruct the history of our journal, which we describe in a special section on the WS website: https://ws.stat.gov.pl/70years. There you can take a look at a timeline, read a brief account of the journal’s history, browse through a gallery showing the journal’s covers that have changed throughout the years, and study the profiles of all the editors-in-chief. The website will be a great place to visit to learn more about the history of WS. We will soon publish an album entitled ‘70 Years of Wiadomości Statystyczne. History – People – Ideas’ (in Polish), which presents a detailed account of how our journal was founded and how it developed over seven decades.
As part of the celebrations planned to take place during the 6th Congress of Polish Statistics, on 1st July 2026 at 10.00 a.m. a plenary discussion panel will be held under the patronage of WS, titled ‘Scientific thought and modern technologies in the context of official statistical research’. The opening remarks to the discussion will be delivered by Prof. Bogumił Kamiński. The debate will be moderated by Prof. Mirosław Szreder. The panellists will include the President of Statistics Poland and Editor-in-Chief of WS, Prof. Marek Cierpiał-Wolan, as well as Prof. Dominik Batorski, Prof. Agnieszka Chłoń-Domińczak, Prof. Alina Jędrzejczak, Prof. Waldemar Tarczyński and Prof. Aleksander Welfe. The panellists will discuss the current and future challenges faced by both official statistics and the theory of statistics. Moreover, the participants will talk about the modern forms of the exchange of knowledge between theorists and practitioners of statistics. The discussions will be streamed through Statistics Poland’s YouTube channel.
On the same day, at 2.30 p.m., an open joint meeting of the Editorial Board of WS and the Scientific Statistical Council will be held. The meeting, attended by Polish and international guests, will focus on the role of WS as a scientific journal linked to both official statistics and the academic community. The discussion, held in English, will be moderated by Marek Cierpiał-Wolan. The event will be streamed on YouTube.
