The 6th Congress of Polish Statistics has come to an end, bringing together representatives of public administration, academia, and business for two days of discussions on the key challenges facing modern statistics. The Congress demonstrated that modern official statistics is not only about collecting data, but above all about effectively integrating, analysing and using it to support informed decisions on social and economic development.
The Congress programme focused on the use of new data sources and innovative research methods to better understand phenomena that are difficult to observe directly. Participants discussed, among other topics, the measurement of the shadow economy, changes in the labour market, poverty, demographic processes, spatial analyses, and the role of official statistics in supporting public policymaking. Particular attention was paid to data integration from multiple sources, enabling a more reliable picture of reality and a more effective response to today's challenges.
One of the highlights of the Congress was a press briefing presenting the results of an experimental study on the occupational structure of the Polish workforce. For the first time, administrative data were used to provide a detailed picture of 15.5 million people employed across 443 occupations, while also identifying professions most exposed to automation and the development of artificial intelligence.
The programme also featured sessions devoted to poverty, including a new approach to measuring energy poverty, analyses of public transport accessibility, changes in inflation measurement methodology, and the use of spatial data in development planning. Experts emphasised that reliable data and advanced analytical methods are essential for designing effective public policies tailored to the diverse needs of communities.
The Congress also addressed demographic challenges, the integration of migrants into the labour market, data security, statistical communication, and the promotion of statistical literacy. Young researchers were also recognised during the event, with awards presented to the winners of the President of Statistics Poland Competition for the best master's and doctoral theses in the field of statistics.
The 6th Congress of Polish Statistics confirmed that official statistics is playing an increasingly important role in understanding social and economic processes and supporting evidence-based decision-making. In an era of rapid change and an ever-growing volume of available information, modern data analysis methods are becoming the foundation of effective public policies and a better understanding of the world around us.
