17 February. Civil Service Day in Poland
On 17 February, we observe Civil Service Day – a statutory holiday dedicated to all civil servants and public administration employees, established to commemorate the adoption by the Parliament of the Second Polish Republic of the Act on the State Civil Service of 17 February 1922.
It is a special occasion to highlight the role of civil servants and public administration employees who, through their daily work, contribute to the efficient functioning of the state and serve citizens. The civil service is a cornerstone of public trust, ensuring continuity, professionalism and adherence to ethical standards in public life.
Official statistics play an important role within this system. Statistics Poland (GUS) was one of the first public institutions established in independent Poland in 1918. Notably, since its establishment, Statistics Poland has never changed its name, which reflects the continuity of its mission and its lasting role within the public administration system.
For over a century, official statistics have provided reliable data that support evidence-based decision-making by public authorities, businesses and citizens. The work of the civil service ensures that statistical data are collected, processed and disseminated in accordance with the principles of professionalism, independence and transparency.
On the occasion of Civil Service Day, we extend our sincere thanks and best wishes to all civil servants and public administration employees. May your work continue to serve the public good, strengthen trust in public institutions and provide a source of professional fulfilment.
